EDU435 Week 7

This week in EDU 435 we were asked to review a peers learning segment in edTPA. I must admit I am getting a bit more familiar with edTPA. I do believe that there are some parts that are a bit alien to me. I struggled a bit with reviewing my peers document. I felt that they more than covered all the instruction details from introduction to closure. Where I struggled the most was the academic language and language supports. After EDU 435 last week and DR. Nanny's zoom session this week I believe I have a better grasp on the subject. I have done a lot of research on edTPA this semester outside of class online. I found some useful information and some very vague material. Here is a link I found somewhat useful. http://www.passedtpa.com/hello-world/ I'm determined to find a way to write a edTPA learning segment with ease. In clinical this week we are working really hard with our math intervention group. We did some guided practice questions today and it seems to be paying off. We've been working with rounding/estimating numbers to the nearest tens and hundreds. Many of the students are now able to determine the benchmark numbers without a number line. As for the overall behavior of the students as a whole its improved. We still have a few getting written up and talking to the principal. I have seemed to established a good rapport with my students and earned their respect. I honestly just treat them like little adults and show them the same respect that I'd expect from others. Usually once I have corrected poor behavior they fall into place. I must say a stern look goes a long way. I sat down with my CE today and discussed my learning segment with her. She liked several of my ideas and would like me to use a Frayer Model instead of the written assignment I had chosen. I let her know I would change this in my lesson to meet her needs. I've not used the Frayer Model yet so I think it will be good for me to do something I don't normally. She did give me some good feedback about my lesson on volcanoes. We are going to build our very own volcanoes that actually erupt in class. Its a very simple activity and inexpensive to make. I was a bit concerned about doing the activity with all of the behavior concerns we had this year. She had thought this was an excellent idea and believes they will enjoy it. We are going to perform the activity outside to avoid the mess. I think that this weeks related standard should be Standard 4: Teachers Facilitate Learning for Their Students. I collaborated with my CE about my learning segment. I've used the data from our most recent BOG's to modify my teaching in my lesson to help my students better understand the content.
